Location of project

Bespoke Aircraft Hangar Door Automation

Project Overview

Client: Department of Defence
Location: Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, Dublin 22
Project Scope: Automation of hangar doors in Hangar 3
Total Project Cost: €1,182,800 (excluding maintenance costs)
Project Duration: 32 weeks

Objectives

The main objective of this project was to automate the four hangar doors in Hangar 3 at Casement Aerodrome. This included the design, supply, and installation of an automation system for both straight and curved door sections within the hangar.

Scope of Work

  1. Door Configuration:
    • Straight Doors: Four doors combined to form a single leaf, resulting in two bi-parting leafs.
    • Curved Doors: Six doors combined to form a single leaf, also resulting in two bi-parting leafs.
  2. Drive and Power Supply:
    • Each door leaf to be equipped with at least one drive unit.
    • Installation of eight high-level power supply points by sub-contractor DOR Contract Services.
  3. Control System:
    • Implementation of a “deadman” or “hold to run” mode operation.
    • Push button control to be agreed upon with the client.
  4. Project Management and Safety:
    • EA provided Project Supervisor Construction Stage (PSCS) and a Project Manager.
    • Detailed design, certification, drawings, and operation and maintenance manuals managed by EDS under EA guidance.
    • On-site familiarisation training for EA engineers during installation.

  1. Health and Safety Compliance:
    • Comprehensive risk assessments and method statements.
    • Safety health and welfare training for all company employees.
    • Development of an accident and emergency plan.
  2. Sub-Contractor Roles:
    • EDS UK: Full project management, design, and build of the automation system.
    • DOR Contract Services: Electrical works, including 3-phase power supply installation for each hangar door.

Implementation and Timeline

The project was meticulously planned and executed over a period of 32 weeks, broken down into:

  • Design Stage: 12 weeks
  • Manufacture Stage: 12 weeks
  • Installation Stage: 8 weeks

During the installation phase, key personnel from EA were on-site for an 8-week training period to ensure seamless transition and maintenance of the automated systems.

Key Challenges and Solutions

  1. Complex Door Configurations:
    • The project involved intricate automation mechanisms for both straight and curved door sections.
    • Solution: Detailed CAD drawings and precise engineering ensured smooth integration and operation of the door systems.

  1. Safety and Compliance:
    • Ensuring all safety protocols and regulations were adhered to was paramount.
    • Solution: EDS UK developed thorough risk assessments and training programs to mitigate potential hazards.

  1. Coordination with Multiple Stakeholders:
    • Coordination between the Department of Defence, EA, EDS UK, and DOR Contract Services was critical.
    • Solution: Regular meetings and updates facilitated clear communication and alignment of project goals.

Results and Impact

The automation of the hangar doors at Casement Aerodrome significantly enhanced operational efficiency and safety. The automated system allows for smooth and reliable operation, minimizing manual intervention and reducing the risk of operational errors. The project was completed within the allocated budget and timeframe, showcasing effective project management and technical expertise.
