Gate Installations at Harbour Court, Dublin by Electro Automation
Project Overview
Electro Automation was appointed as the project manager for the installation of security gates at Harbour Court in Dublin, a busy pedestrian area prone to anti-social behaviour and safety issues. The scope of the project included both trial works and main installation works to enhance security while maintaining access for local businesses and residents. Electro Automation also served as the primary liaison between Dublin Town, the electrical contractor, and builders, ensuring smooth coordination among all stakeholders.
Key Project Highlights
- Trial Phase: Determining Post Locations. The trial phase of the project, which took place between April 29 and May 1, 2024, focused on investigating potential obstructions below the laneway surface. The primary goal was to dig trial holes at key points along Harbour Court’s three access routes to ensure proper placement of gate posts. Redwicks Construction led this phase, identifying underground services like pipes or pub cellars that could interfere with the gate foundations.
- Main Works: Installation of Swing Gates. The main phase involved the installation of three automated swing gates at the entrances to Harbour Court:
- Marlborough Street: A double swing gate paired with a pedestrian gate.
- Eden Quay: A single swing gate.
- Abbey Street: Another single swing gate.
Each gate was equipped with security automation systems, including keypad entry, GSM controllers, and exit loops for vehicles. Irish Fencing supplied and installed the gates, while Sensor Electrical handled the cabling and electrical work. Power was supplied from nearby buildings to support the gate automation.
- Liaison and Coordination Electro Automation managed communication between 21 affected businesses, Dublin Town, and the contractors. This ensured minimal disruption to the local community and maintained clear lines of responsibility. Our role also included handling traffic management through Redwicks during the installation.
- Civil and Electrical Works Civil works involved constructing concrete bases for the posts at each of the three entrances, ensuring the stability of the gates. The electrical installation, managed by Sensor Electrical, included the laying of mains cables and wiring the automated systems.
Challenges & Solutions
- Underground Services: During the trial phase, trial holes uncovered potential obstructions, which required adjustments to the positioning of posts.
- Traffic & Public Safety: Given the laneway’s proximity to the Luas line and high pedestrian traffic, careful planning and coordination were necessary to maintain safety throughout the installation.
Electro Automation successfully delivered a robust security solution for Harbour Court, combining innovative technology with a well-coordinated project management approach. The project not only enhanced security but also ensured minimal disruption to local businesses. The use of automated gates, integrated with modern access control systems, represents a long-term solution to a challenging urban environment.
